Russia sets new record high in weekly COVID-19 fatalities for fourth straight time

MOSCOW, July 18. /TASS/. The incidence of the coronavirus infection in Russia has practically stopped increasing over the past seven days, yet it continues to reach record highs in terms of fatalities for the fourth week in a row, according to TASS’ calculations based on the data from the anti-coronavirus crisis center.

From July 12 to 18, the crisis center reported 174,800 new infections countrywide. This is only 1.4% more than during the previous seven days, while last week the increase amounted to 8%, and it was 18.7% the week before.

The crisis center registered 5,417 fatalities over seven days. This is a new high since the beginning of the pandemic, the previous record high of 5,077 deaths was recorded last week.

At the same time, the mortality indicator is almost not changing against the background of high incidence. Compared to last Sunday, it increased from 2.47% to 2.49%.

The number of recoveries countrywide has increased by 141,012 compared to 131,318 during the period from July 5 through 11. Nevertheless, the number of active cases, that is, patients who are currently undergoing treatment, continues to grow, although more slowly than earlier. Over a week, it increased to 468,483, the highest since February 2.
